Arènes de Vic-fezensac

Vic-Fezensac is one of the major bullfighting towns in the South-West of France, thanks to its arenas. Their long history began in 1929 when the “Bull Racing Society” asked the municipal council for the construction of arenas.
The plaza was built in about five months, and the inauguration took place on September 20 and 21, 1931 with two Landes races, in front of a huge crowd. Their capacity was then 3.500 places.

The first race took place on May 15, 1932, it was a novillada by Candido DIAZ for Antonio Labrador PINTURA, Francisco Gomez ALDEANO and Florentino BALLESTEROS. The weather prevented the race from running smoothly and only three novillos were killed.

In 1933 the capacity of the arenas was increased to 5.847 places and it was on September 16 of the following year that the first bullfight by Joaquim BUENDIA PEÑA took place with Nicanor VILLALTA, Armillita CHICO and El ESTUDIANTE.

In 1938, by notarial deed, the members of the CTV undertake to PERSONALLY cover the possible deficit of the bullfight of FELIX MORENO ARDANUY of June 5, 1938. The Toros are fought by Niño de la PALMA, El ESTUDIANTE and Curro CARRO. After this run, no shows would be held until May 26, 1947. The only other interruption would be in 1968.

Joseph FOURNIOL and Alfred DEGEIL “AGUILLITA” were the two main advisors, volunteers, pioneers of the Vicoise aficion. Vic has not forgotten them, FOURNIOL gave his name to the arenas in 1956 and, in the callejon, to the right of the presidency, there has been a souvenir plaque since 1967 with this inscription:

“TO THE MEMORY OF AGUILLITA WHOSE CULT FOR THE TORO DE LIDIA HAS ALLOWED TO MAKE THE LITTLE PLAZA OF VIC A GREAT FRENCH PLAZA”

In 1983, Eager to assert its difference through original communication, the Bullfighting Club Vicois singled out the bullfighting poster by entrusting its creation to prestigious artists friends of Jean-Paul CHAMBAS. Thus was born “Toros and Creativity”, with each year the poster label “TOROS EN VIC”. “Toros en Vic 1983 is produced by Jean-Paul CHAMBAS, Member of the CTV

In 1990, the life-size statue which, in front of the arena, represents a toro by Victorino MARTIN collapsing at the feet of Francisco RUIZ MIGUEL was not erected to the glory of the latter who, however, was chosen as a “symbol”. The inscription on the plaque is as follows:

“HOMBOLIZED TO THE TRUTH OF THE FIESTA BRAVA SYMBOLIZED BY THE TORERO FRANCISCO RUIZ MIGUEL”
