Estang

Arènes d'Estang

The Estang arenas were built at the very beginning of the XNUMXth century. Built in wood, oak beams support the framework covered with Roman tiles.
These arenas, unique in their architecture but also in the fact that they were built by the local population over nearly 30 years, are part of the regional heritage.

Listed in the directory of historic monuments in 1984, these arenas have been classified in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1994.

The Estang arenas were named after a bullfighter from the Estang town, Jean Bartherotte, who was shot during the Second World War.
The wooden frame is painted “oxblood” red. Ethnological interest of this witness to the bullfighting practice of this region.

Among all the events which have illustrated the history of the Estang arenas, let us cite the arrival on August 19, 1984 of the President of the Republic François Mitterrand who attended the holiday race. And on June 16, 2001, it was the 100th anniversary of the arenas which was celebrated as it should be in the presence of Doctor Jacques Cohen, mayor of Estang and many personalities, notably descendants of the builders.

For several decades, the bullfighting organizers of Estang trusted the ganadero Joseph Labat and these arenas were often the scene of exploits with the Vis brothers. Today, several ganaderias tread the large Estang track, thanks in particular to the work of the bullfighting club. The elders therefore did not work for nothing. The tradition continues, Estang remains a stronghold of Landes racing with 4 races organized during the year.
