At the end of the hollow path, follow the footsteps of the pilgrims towards Santiago de Compostela... Church of the Hospital of Sainte-Christie in Cravencères: chapel from the end of the 12th century dependent on the old Commandery of the Hospital Sainte-Christie.
Secrets of stones
Located on the road to Santiago de Compostela, at the end of a sunken path, the building is very simple, rectangular with a flat apse and has a nave of three bays. It is entered through two doors: in the west gable, a portal with two simple semi-circular arches and a small portal under an awning to the south. For the pilgrim, one could sleep there, eat there, receive treatment and get their dose of religion. The pilgrimage will attract crowds making more or less long stops in monasteries and “Hospitals”.
Spirit of the place
“Bas-Armagnac in its entirety: its passion and its interiority, its mystery and its transparency, its wildness and… its hospitality. From this portion of the universe, a quiet force emanates, which goes back to the most ancient ages and invades the surroundings: the wild meadow, the sunken path which further crosses the forest with the unsuspected giants, up to the small valley of Midouzon, with timeless charm. Everything is soft and powerful, and we come to enjoy a somewhat solitary tranquility, but full of dreams and unexpected encounters. Is it for all these reasons that the historian Charles Samaran chose to rest after more than a century of existence, in this place? A place of research and study, but also a place where we walk and travel, as he liked to do in his Gascon country. » – Bruno SIRVEN, Tree & Landscape 32.

All of the buildings of this former commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de- Jerusalem must have been destroyed during the Wars of Religion. The possessions of the commandery were delimited by boundaries. One of them is located along the path 50 meters west of the chapel, at the corner of the woods. Will you be able to find it?
