Église Notre-Dame de Daugue

Pass through the porch and go back in time... Notre-Dame de Daugue Church in Dému, one of the oldest churches in the Gers, built on the foundations of a primitive chapel from the end of the 10th century.
Secrets of stones
Three successive campaigns of archaeological excavations attest to the occupation of the Daugue site since Antiquity, in the 3rd and 4th centuries, as well as the presence of a religious building from the early Middle Ages. The primitive chapel, a vast church built around the year 980, has an apse with three semi-circular apses, replaced around the middle of the 11th century by the flat pre-Romanesque apse still existing. In the so-called Carolingian style of Hispano-Visigothic or Mozarabic inspiration, there are barely a few remaining south of the Garonne and in Spain. It has undergone several alterations and destructions in the following centuries and continues to pose enigmas to researchers.

Spirit of the place
“A high place in the Pays d'Armagnac, among the most little-known but whose splendor radiates the countryside, with the complicity of the daylights which shine brightly in succession. The highest point of the country, you have to venture on all the surrounding ridge roads, to enjoy the panorama they offer over almost its entire extent and well beyond: towards the Astaracian south then the Pyrenees - certainly higher - and towards the most distant horizons, on the borders of Béarn and Landes to the west, Albret to the north, and closer to the Pays d'Auch to the east. The invitation to discover this old place is almost initiatory, if one ceremonially enters through the cemetery porch, and even more so if one presents oneself along the portico outlined by majestic yews, mystical trees in essence, which you have to know how to guess. Another symbol, just as religious, is the vineyard crane, a metal gallows anchored on the road embankments, which marks all the Gascon vineyards with its enigmatic silhouette. » – Bruno SIRVEN, Tree & Landscape 32.

Nearby
Set off to discover Dému, whose name of pre-Roman origin attests to more than 2 years of human occupation. The imposing 000th century gate tower, listed as a Historic Monument, is a characteristic example of a fortified gate of a Gascon village from the Middle Ages. The Bernet church offers a legendary landscape made up of the mound, the river, the miraculous spring, the chapel, the presbytery, the woods and the ponds.
