Eglise Saint-Luperc de Loissan

Imposing tower on a round mound, in humped Gascony... Saint Luperc de Loissan Church in Arblade-Le-Haut: old Romanesque church destroyed during the Hundred Years' War and rebuilt from the 15th century in ogival style.
Secrets of stones
Built on a splendid promontory, this imposing building was built on a Gallo-Roman site, as evidenced by the discovery of tiles and a sarcophagus. It has a Gothic style apse with cut sides and very rare folk art furniture from the 18th century consisting of a tomb altar and two altarpieces made of carved, painted and gilded wood, by Jean-Pierre Heures, (1712- 1778) master cabinetmaker from Eastern France, installed in Nogaro under Louis XV. Built on an isolated site, the church is remarkable for its imposing tower flanked by a circular staircase turret.
Spirit of the place
“Round clods in hunchbacked Gascony. Choose a well-placed hill. Not necessarily the highest. Add loose earth on top taken from the side or, more skillfully, by digging a ditch around it and projecting it into the middle. Once the rounded area has been raised and modeled, build anything that merits elevation and protection. Why not a tower: watchtower, defense tower, clock tower, bell tower. All of this at once, because such an investment alone justifies several uses. As a bell tower and its cowbells are capable of, which mark time and signify space. Bell towers which unite around the same spirit and preach for their parish, even if it means maintaining old quarrels... Bells which speak their scales and warn of what is happening. Who announce what is celebrated and what is mourned. Life as it goes, and when it goes wrong. » – Bruno SIRVEN, Tree & Landscape 32.
