Lavoir de Demu

As in many rural villages, the Dému washhouse was an institution whose use was both functional and social.
It was not until 2016 that the current municipality decided to restore it.
In fact, the generalization of household comfort was only effective in our countryside after the Second World War, and then only among the wealthiest families. It was not until the 60s that it really became popular. That of Dému was still used by a few diehards in the early 70s.

As for its social role, for the washerwomen it had the same function as the café for the men: exchanging the latest village gossip around the washing boards was a tradition, and woe betide the municipal employee if he had forgotten to clean The Pelvis.

Then comes the time of oblivion……. He looked very sad, surrounded by brambles and abandoned to his fate. But even more than the pond and its shelter, it is the fountain which feeds it which is remarkable, built of bricks, it captures a source at a place called JUBES and never dries up even in years of drought.

Totally abandoned, partially collapsed, and almost invisible in the middle of the brambles, it was rehabilitated the same year as the wash house.
