Village de Bascous

The commune of Bascous constitutes the beginning of the Bas Armagnac region which continues towards ÉAUZE and MANCIET. The village formerly constituted the limit of the counties of Fezensac and Armagnac, in the dociese of AUCH.
Its name comes from the Basques (Vascons) who occupied this region after 627. The boundaries of the commune have not changed since the XNUMXth century.
The medieval Castle of Bascous, in the heart of the village, is a 16th century building, built of flat red-brown bricks which would have been manufactured on site, in a long-disappeared tile factory, which was located at a place called “ at the pond”. It was the seat of a lordship which belonged, before the Revolution, to François de Cours. Currently, the castle is municipal property and the interior houses a beautiful period staircase. The Sainte Marie Magdelaine church has a rectangular nave, a flat apse and an interesting wall bell tower whose five pinnacles are reminiscent of a hand outstretched towards the sky.
The sculpted marble font was carved from a pre-Roman capital.
