Village de Maupas

Maupas takes its name from "bad pas" because the place was once a den of brigands
In order to cleanse the region of brigands, a castle was built by an eminence and his presence gradually eliminated the criminals who infested the region and this is how this territory became inhabited.
In the middle of an oak forest mixed with a few beech trees, it is here the religious heritage which dominates its insertion into the landscape which constitutes the primary attraction of the town.

The 2th century St Jean Baptiste church is characterized by a square bell tower with XNUMX floors, with opening on each side. It has XNUMXth century oak and walnut woodwork on the lower walls.

The famous poet Francis Jammes came to follow the Sunday service in the church of St Jean Baptiste de Maupas during the visits he made to his sister living in Estang, the neighboring village.
She had an aunt by marriage who lived in the village. Since his “conversion” to Catholicism in 1905, the date on which the law separating Churches and State was promulgated, Francis Jammes had become a fervent practitioner! This church even inspired a poem entitled “the church dressed in leaves”.
In describing this church, he sees a “chapel of the fields clad in a little wood” and the sound of the modest bell resounds “on the glory of the August corn, above the harvested barns, above the granaries and areas, above the threshing machines that snore”
