Village de Panjas

The commune of Panjas extends to the Catalan plateau which peaks at 197 meters.
It is on the site of the Catalan plateau that we discovered important vestiges of civilization testifying to 3000 to 4000 years before our era: the Catalan, currently covered with vines, was the support of an important habitat.
The history of the commune remained obscure until towards the end of the 11th century, when documents seemed to reveal the existence of a monastery which was undoubtedly very modest.
It was during this period that the Saint Laurent church was built. A little later the Castle will appear.
These two remarkable buildings are well worth a detour through this town.
The remains of the feudal castle give only a faint idea of its former stature.
Dominating the Midour valley, it was located outside the village, itself enclosed within its ramparts. The castle was flanked by 6 towers and communicated with the village through a fortified gate.
It was the home of a branch of the Pardaillan family which distinguished itself for a long time on the battlefields.
In 1626, the village of Panjas was still surrounded by walls but Richelieu had these last witnesses of seigniorial power demolished.
The important viticulture in the town benefits from the showcases that are the cooperative cellar but also the private cellars.
