Ardent, captivating and epic, the life of Musketeer favorite of the French is not a quiet river novel! Enter the legend by taking yourself for the famous Charles de Batz de Castelmore (D'artagnan for short), born in Lupiac at the Château de Castelmore!

From history to the novel of Cloak and Sword ⚔️

The municipality of Lupiac, Castelnau in the heart of Gascony, saw the birth around 1610 of one of the emblematic characters in the history of France, the most famous of the Gascons: Charles de Batz de Castelmore, otherwise called D'artagnan.

D'Artagnan, 7th child of the Batz Castelmore, legendary hero of the most famous swashbuckling novel “The three Musketeers“, did indeed exist.

He left Lupiac around 1630 to become Captain of the Musketeers. Great loyal servant of Mazarin then of Louis XIV, placed all their trust in him. An extraordinary destiny and later… A legend !

To create his character, Alexandre Dumas was inspired by the work of a novelist from the century of Louis XIV, Gatien Courtils by Sandras who in 1700 published “lThe Memoirs of Monsieur d'Artagnan ". In these memoirs the author has staged in a very romanticized way the life of an authentic Cadet of Gascony, captain-lieutenant of the first Company of Musketeers of King Louis XIV: Charles de Batz Castelmore d'Artagnan.
