The Arenas of Nogaro
The place to be… the arenas in Armagnac & d’Artagnan, there is no shortage of them. More than places to visit, our arenas are the soul of the villages, where you need to be for celebrations & to discover our tradition, the Landes race.
The Nogaro bullring was built in 1929 by an Italian contractor who took the golden ratio into account. It allows you to find the ideal dimensions between length and width (here 40mx25m). It was Greek architects who developed these calculations. Leonardo da Vinci and Corbusier were inspired by it! Before the construction of the arenas in 1929, races were organized in town. : boxes had been built and carts were used to demarcate the perimeter of the track and as stands. Before 1900, certain Landes races were organized with bulls. Since that time, cows have formed the herds. Landes racing cows are the mothers and sisters of the bulls. They are of Spanish, Portuguese or Camargue origin. They are heavy, imposing animals, weighing 300 to 350 kg, reaching 400 kg. They start around 3 years old and can practice until 15 years old. A farm is called “ganaderia” and includes from 50 to more than 100 animals.
The Collegiate Church of Saint Nicolas
a preserved Romanesque part, remarkable capitals and wall paintings which have earned it the status of a Historic Monument
And a bit of history in all that... when Roman art and pilgrimage meet!
The interest of this church comes from its preserved Romanesque part and in particular its capitals. Today it is classified as a Historic Monument following the discovery, in 1995, of murals evoking the life of Saint-Laurent
